[edit] Which objects are involved in the puzzle?
[edit] Is this puzzle essential to the plot, or is it a secondary objective?
- Essential
[edit] What actions do you need to take?
- Player must construct a makeshift rope by tying together clothing, and towel. (Rope will not be sufficiently long otherwise.)
- Enter Airlock.
- Player must attach rope to sturdy handrail within Airlock.
- Player must initiate Airlock sequence by striking Airlock Release button in Upper Deck Corridor by launching statue of Zod at it.
- Press hull magnetization control on outside of ship.
[edit] How many turns do you have to complete the puzzle?
- For as long as your suit’s oxygen lasts.
[edit] What text appears after each action is completed?
- Take clothes- you pick up the huge pile of clothes and congratulate yourself on your sense of style.
- Tie clothes together – You fumble with the clothes for some time before finally constructing a makeshift rope. Your sense of pride is deflated only slightly by a nagging sense that it’s just a little too short.
- Tie towel to clothes/rope. – You look at your handywork, things are always better with a towel…
- Examine Airlock Release Button. - It's a simple pressure switch. You remember the old days when airlock controls were situated inside the airlock itself - after countless hundreds flushed themselves into space by accident this curious design flaw was outlawed.
- Press Airlock Release button (in corridor) – The door in front of you closes with a low hiss. Through a small port hole you can see the external airlock door open into deep space. You feel relieved you weren't in the airlock at the time...
- Press Airlock Release Button second time (in corridor) - The external door seals itself again. The door in front of you grinds open ominously, allowing access to the airlock once more.
- Attach/tie rope/clothes to handrail – You fasten the other end around your waist and test your “rope”. It seems solid, but there’s really only one way to find out…
- Press Airlock Release button – You can’t reach it without leaving the Airlock. You can see it just out of reach, mocking you.
- Throw any object but Zod at switch – Nice idea, but you’ve a feeling you might need that later. If you’re going to throw stuff around, it makes sense to throw useless tat.
- Throw Zod at switch – The statue flies gracefully through the air, arms outstretched, and hits the switch dead on. The door in front of you grinds closed, and you’re suddenly aware of being ripped forcibly out of the ship, and into space.
[edit] What words do you read when you complete the puzzle?
- The rope tightens suddenly around your waist, saving you from the horror of deep space. You know you don’t have long, the clothing is starting to fray already. You reach out and just manage to hit the External Hull Magnetization Switch. Your boots immediately attach themselves to the ships hull, freeing you to explore safely.
[edit] What words do you read if you don't complete the puzzle?
- Releases Airlock without being tied down. – You flail frantically, trying to get a hold on the ship, but you already know it’s too late. You watch the ship slowly shrink into the inky depths of space and wonder why you didn’t tie yourself down...
- Releases Airlock with short (towel-less) rope. - The rope tightens suddenly around your waste, saving you from the horror of deep space. You know you don’t have long, the clothing is starting to fray already. You can see the External Hull Magnetization Switch that will save your life, but your rope is just a little too short to let you reach it. You pull frantically against it, hoping for those extra few inches. Your efforts are rewarded with a sickening tearing noise, and suddenly the switch, and the ship itself are forever out of your grasp. [edit]
[edit] Help! I'm stuck! Give me a hint
- Releasing the airlock switch (once have rope)– Superman wasn’t the only one who could fly.
- Making the rope – If you’re thinking of going outside, you’re going to need some clothes. (Though you’re dressed for it already.)
[edit] Special development instructions:
- Note – Clearly I’ve added a couple of switches which didn’t previously exist. I’ve also changed the status of a couple of objects to “takeable”, specifically the clothes and the statue. (Towel is already takeable.) I've not added any of the new items to the wiki as if this puzzle isn't used they would probably be superfluous.
The hull magnetisation means the player should now be able to access the engines with ease, and will also allow safe return via the airlock. It's not an integral part of this puzzle, (and as such hasn't been listed) but I would suggest a switch within the airlock itself which closes the outer door (but doesn't open it) and opens the inner one, allowing easy passage back into the ship. You may of course prefer to develop another devious puzzle by which the player returns??
